Now best known as Ventotene, Pandataria is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea historically used by the Romans to exile high society adulteresses, nonconforming women, and those who amassed too much power or influence. Centuries later, Mussolini imprisoned political dissidents there.
“Pandataria” is also the title of a show by an independent dance company that explores the island’s history, reclaiming it as a symbol of diversity and feminism. Map to Pandataria documents the company’s exciting yet complicated journey as they navigate various complications, including the challenge of premiering at the historic Roman theater of Mérida.
