Investigating the rapes and murders of elderly women are two detectives, the violent Alfaro and the stuttering, insecure Velarde played superbly by Álamo and by de la Torre respectively. The two detectives' tense relationship becomes closer and more understanding as the investigation evolves during their search for the truth. Much more than a thriller, Sorogoyen's feature film (following his success with Stockholm) is a character study that, with hints of black humour, looks at social tensions, police officers lives and Spain's Catholicism set during the Pope's visit to Spain in the hot summer of 2011. The action also coincides with the protests of 15-M provoking a local security challenge.
